# What to Do When Flooring Scope Changes

A changed floor area, newly exposed condition or revised finish choice can alter the project that was originally discussed. Pause the assumption, describe the change and review the affected scope before treating it as agreed work.

## Identify What Changed

Separate an owner request from a newly discovered site condition. Adding another room is a different event from finding an unexpected covering under the existing floor. Both deserve a clear description, but they may require different assessment and approval steps.

Record the location and the known facts. Use photos where helpful, without diagnosing an uncertain condition yourself. Keep the original scope available so everyone can see which part of the proposed work is being reconsidered.

## Review the Effect on the Whole Plan

Ask how the change affects preparation, finish, included areas, access and the sequence of work. A small visible adjustment can have implications elsewhere, such as a transition to another room or the point at which an area can return to use.

Do not assume an informal request has been included simply because it was mentioned on site. Confirm who needs to evaluate it and who can approve any revised work. Pricing or timing changes belong in the actual project discussion, not in a general guide.

## Keep One Current Scope

Once a change is agreed, keep its description with the current project information. Identify which earlier decision it replaces. This is especially important when several people communicate with the team or when the business operates across shifts.

If the issue remains unresolved, keep it marked as open and avoid planning dependent work as though a decision has been made. The useful habit is to distinguish requested, assessed and approved changes rather than calling all three "updated."

## Communicate Before the Next Dependent Step

A short written record reduces the chance that two people continue from different versions of the plan. Keep the change record connected to the actual project agreement.

- Describe the changed area or condition.
- Identify which original assumption it affects.
- Confirm assessment and approval responsibilities.
- Keep the current scope and unresolved items together.
