Questions About Returning a Floor to Service

A floor can look complete before every intended use is permitted. Get project-specific return-to-use instructions and share them with everyone responsible for moving people, furniture or equipment back into the space.

    Separate the Types of Use

List the ways the floor will return to service: walking, replacing furnishings, storing items, moving equipment and resuming the normal business activity. Different uses should not be collapsed into one vague instruction to "wait until it is ready."

Ask which uses are allowed and what conditions apply to each for the specified system and installation. This guide does not provide universal hours or days. A timeline from a different floor or an online example is not an instruction for your project.

    Identify Who Gives the Release

Confirm the project contact who supplies return-to-use guidance and how any change will be communicated. Keep the current instruction in the project record instead of relying on a comment remembered from an earlier conversation.

If the installer needs to evaluate the actual conditions before confirming use, make that review point part of the plan. Do not schedule another trade or move equipment back merely because a target installation date has passed.

    Coordinate the First Activities

Review what will happen first when the area reopens. Movers, cleaners, staff and other contractors may each need the relevant instructions. Ask about approved protection and handling for the particular finish before using a general floor covering or moving heavy items.

If operating needs change, contact the project team before using the floor differently from the agreed plan. The purpose is to resolve the new requirement while there is still time to adjust the arrangement, not after the activity has already occurred.

Keep the Instructions Easy to Find

Store the finish information, current return-to-use guidance and care contact together. Share only the information each participant needs, but make sure the person controlling access has the current version.

    • List each activity that must resume.
    • Get guidance for the actual floor system and conditions.
    • Confirm the person authorized to release the area.
    • Pass the instructions to movers, cleaners and site users.

    Discuss Your Floor

Tell Ellett Epoxy where the project is, how the space is used and which questions you want to work through.
