# Concrete Grinding vs. Polishing: Different Project Goals

Grinding and polishing are related to working on concrete, but they do not describe the same project goal. First decide whether the concrete is being prepared for another floor system or will remain the finished surface.

## Name the Intended Finish

When someone asks for concrete grinding, ask what happens afterward. The goal may be to prepare the surface for a coating, address a previous finish as part of a larger scope, or work toward an exposed concrete appearance. Those are different conversations even though some equipment or preparation steps may be related.

A useful request names the result: "We want a coating over the slab" or "We want to discuss concrete as the visible finished floor." That statement gives the assessment a direction without prescribing a process before the floor is inspected.

## Understand What the Words Leave Unanswered

The word grinding does not tell you the completed appearance, the full preparation scope or whether another material will be installed. Polishing likewise needs a project-specific explanation of the intended finish and the condition of the starting slab.

Ask the proposal to describe the end result and the included work in plain language. If one quote concerns surface preparation and another concerns a finished concrete floor, comparing the totals alone will not tell you which offers the right scope.

## Keep Existing Conditions in the Decision

Past repairs, coverings and variations in the slab can influence the appearance and work required. Provide the floor history you know, and identify what is hidden or uncertain. Do not assume a process can remove every existing feature or create a uniform appearance.

Connect the floor decision to the room’s actual use and the care expectations that will follow. The finished-floor conversation should include how the result will be reviewed and what instructions you will receive, not only how the surface is worked on.

## Compare the Right Scope

Before approving, read the proposal as a sequence from existing condition to intended finish. Every major step should have a clear purpose. If a description stops at "grind concrete," ask what completion means for that particular project.

- Identify preparation versus a finished-floor goal.
- Compare proposals against the same intended result.
- Keep unknown slab conditions visible.
- Confirm included areas, transitions and finish expectations.
