# Flooring Samples vs. Project Photos: What Each Can Show

A sample and a project photo answer different flooring questions. Use each for what it can show, and avoid treating either as a complete preview of a finish on your own floor.

## Understand the Scale of the Reference

A small sample can introduce a color or finish direction, but it does not show how the appearance reads across a whole room. A project photo provides a wider view, yet it also includes the other property’s lighting, furnishings and camera position.

When comparing references, identify the question you are trying to answer. A color relationship, a general level of pattern movement and the overall feeling of a space are different observations. One image does not need to settle them all.

## Look for Context in Project Photos

Review wide images as well as close details. Notice where windows and lights sit and how much of the floor is visible. Reflections and photo editing can affect your impression of color and contrast.

Use the image to explain what appeals to you without assuming its exact appearance can be transferred to another room or slab. Ask which parts of the reference relate to the finish and which may reflect the setting or photography.

## Connect the Reference to Your Floor

Pair your chosen reference with photos of the actual space and its fixed finishes. Explain the features you want to carry into the discussion. If sample or other review materials are available for the project, ask how they should be used to approve the direction.

Do not assume a particular sample service or mockup is included. Confirm the review process before relying on it. The important point is that everyone understands what a reference establishes and what still depends on the actual project.

## Keep the Approval Clear

Save the final references with a short explanation of why each was selected. Remove abandoned options so the record does not mix current choices with earlier ideas. For metallic work, keep expected pattern variation part of that review.

- Use samples for limited color or finish questions.
- Use whole-room photos to discuss the overall appearance.
- Identify lighting and camera effects where possible.
- Confirm what the final approval materials actually cover.
