# Planning Around Existing Floor Coverings

A floor covered by tile, carpet or an old coating has an uncertain starting point underneath. Plan the removal responsibility and assessment sequence before treating the new floor scope as settled.

## Identify What Is Known

List the visible coverings by room or area and share any documented information about their age or installation. Note previous repairs, layers or recurring issues if you know about them. Label unknown materials as unknown rather than assigning them a product name from appearance.

Take wide photos that show the full space and the boundaries between coverings. The purpose is to explain the starting condition. Do not disturb an uncertain material to get a better photograph or attempt removal before the work has been properly assessed.

## Separate Removal From the New Floor Scope

Confirm who is responsible for evaluating and removing the existing covering, handling the resulting material and leaving the area ready for the next stage. A proposal for a new finish does not automatically include every activity required to expose the slab.

Ask whether the new floor recommendation depends on seeing what is underneath. If so, the project may need a review point after the existing covering is addressed. That is more useful than assuming the hidden surface will match the visible part of another room.

## Plan for Findings Without Guessing at Them

Hidden adhesive, repairs or differences in the slab may become visible when a covering is removed. These are possibilities to account for in the process, not a diagnosis of your floor. Ask how newly discovered conditions would be documented and discussed before additional work is agreed.

If material identification or specialized handling is needed, establish the appropriate qualified party before disturbing the material. Get the required assessment and handling plan before any removal work begins.

## Keep the Handoff Between Stages Clear

Use a simple sequence: existing material identified, removal responsibility agreed, exposed condition reviewed, final preparation and finish scope confirmed. This helps the parties understand when one stage is complete and what must be true before the next begins.

- List coverings and unknown materials by area.

- Allow a review of the newly exposed floor.
- Agree how unexpected conditions affect the next scope decision.
