# Polished Concrete vs. a Coated Floor

Polished concrete uses the existing slab as part of the visible finish. A coated floor introduces a different surface appearance. Compare those directions against the actual slab, desired look and operating needs.

## Decide Whether the Slab Should Be Visible

Start with appearance. If the concrete will remain the visible floor, its existing variation, patches and history belong in the design conversation. A reference from another slab cannot establish what yours will look like.

A coating offers a different finish direction, but it does not remove the need to assess the substrate. Do not assume choosing a coating means every existing condition will be hidden or resolved. Both options begin with understanding the actual floor.

## Compare the Same Intended Use

Describe the activities, movement and cleaning routine the space will support. Ask how each proposed option relates to those conditions. Keep the comparison specific to the systems and project under discussion rather than relying on category labels.

Include appearance priorities and access constraints together. If the business needs a particular sequence or reopening arrangement, that requirement should be considered while the options are assessed, not after a finish is selected.

## Review Preparation and Expectations

Ask what preparation is included in each direction and which conditions remain uncertain. For an exposed finish, discuss how visible repairs or changes in the slab may read. For a coated floor, review the intended appearance and the details at edges and transitions.

Get the relevant care and return-to-use information for the proposed finish. Avoid universal claims that one option lasts longer, needs no maintenance or can always be installed more quickly. Those statements are not a substitute for a defined project scope.

## Make the Decision With the Right Evidence

A useful decision combines a site assessment, the proposed work and the appearance you can reasonably expect. If one of those is missing, keep the option open for discussion rather than treating the comparison as complete.
